Volunteering is where it all started with SDS. We were founded by volunteers in 1992: a group of carers who gave their time to support people in the local community. Volunteering remains to this day an essential part of our organisation.

Volunteering – Individuals

Volunteers assist our clients socially, help with transport, run activities and more. These everyday angels make a huge difference to people’s lives, and we work to ensure that the time that volunteers give is fun and flexible.

If you’re interested in making a difference, the SDS volunteering program is flexible and we are happy to work with whatever hours you can offer. Find out more about assisting with one off functions, setting a weekly or monthly date, or helping out daily. Some of the way our volunteers help include:

  • Providing social interaction on an individual basis
  • Setting up and assisting with group activities. eg: computer classes, bingo, cards, art classes, tai chi
  • Cooking and craft classes
  • Setting up and running conversations during a social group
  • Driving the community bus (volunteers with an endorsed 12 seater license)
  • Assisting with administration and office tasks
  • Accompanying clients to attend the Lifestyle Club and on their return home in the afternoon
  • Assisting clients to attend medical appointments, either at the local doctor or one of Perth’s major hospitals

Volunteering – Become a Community Partner

Community Partners are the community groups and organisations that serve our community. These include local schools and church groups and clubs; Community Shed groups and other not for profit groups.

A few hours of your group’s time could change a person’s life. SDS will work with you to increase your organisation’s capacity to be the solution to real challenges faced by our community.

If your community group or not-profit organisation is interested in becoming a Southern Districts Support Community Program Partner, it’s easy to get started. One of our Managers will contact you to discuss your particular requirements and how to register. We do ensure that Community Partnerships fit within SDS mission and values.

Volunteering – Corporate Opportunities

Join in the journey with us. SDS welcomes requests from local businesses to partner with us in developing collaborative volunteering opportunities and community initiatives.

The difference your business will make in partnering with SDS is not only in improving individuals quality of life, but also in strengthening the local community. If you believe your organisation fits with the SDS mission and values, discuss with us about a Corporate Partnership within your particular requirements.

Volunteer Recognition

SDS understands the importance of volunteer recognition and events. Events throughout the year include National Volunteer Week, International Volunteer Day, quarterly luncheons, Christmas in July and other smaller events throughout the year. Volunteers are often nominated for local and community awards.
